To hold the saddle to the roof rack bar, I used a 1" wide, 1/4" thick iron bar cut to length and drilled to fit over the bolt holes.  This is another weak area of the Thule saddle design.  They have a similar mounting arrangement, but the metal plate they use is so thin it bends around the bar from the pressure of the knobs.  Nothing will bend this bar.
