I used a scrap piece of 1/2" PVC to line the opening for the grab loop.  I drilled the hole with a forstner bit, roughed-up the outside of the pipe, and epoxied it in place.  I left it stand proud by about 1/8" and sanded it down after the epoxy had cured.
