If you build a boxbeam (rather than use a very straight 2x4), you'll need plenty of clamps.  I used 1/2" plywood, but next time I would use 3/4".  This boxbeam turned out a little too flexible.  Nothing that couldn't be worked-around, but it would have been easier to start with a more rigid material from the beginning.
