After marking the 1/2" thickness at the tip of the blade, I started shaping face of the paddle blank by planing down the taper from the top walnut lamination all the way out to the tip.  (The dark areas in the photo on the left have been planed already)  This was a slow process, but the try plane was perfect for the job.
