To mark a uniform width
slot for the inlay strips, I made a simple but effective marking gauge. It's made
from a scrap of cedar with a pencil hole and a small fence to ride along the one finished
edge of the inlay slot. The small fence is made from a glazier's point, driven in
at the required distance from the pencil hole. It simple to make and easier to use than a
compass. It worked well for me because I left a gap as I was installing the strips
which allowed the fence to slide easily.
