The Next One ...
Thank you all for the kind words.
Welcome back Kev. I have been waiting for a new progress report on the Spring Run. This hull design developed out of necessity. I started with the dark strips - ran out and added an accent stripe. Continued with the light strips - ran out and added an accent strip. Finished with the spalted strips. I got my WRC cheap this time but they only had 4 boards left the day I was there. I took what they had and made do. Stay tuned for the deck though. That will be pure imagination.
Hope it looks as good in reality as it does in my head!

Finally got her turned over and started work on the deck.

I really liked the dogwood branch Jimbo put on the deck of his wife's kayak so I decided to expand on the idea and do a whole tree. This is my design idea taped on the wall for inspiration with the Water Lily design.

I spent some time in the moaning chair trying to figure out how to make the tree trunk look like a trunk and not just a dark accent stripe.

For each side I glued two dark strips together and two light strips together.

I cut the dark strip to fit and then drew a taper line on the top. Taped the light strips under the dark and ran them through the band saw together. Wiggled them back and forth as I fed them through to create a texture to give the illusion of tree bark..

Got a light strip perfectly matched to the dark. Looks more like a tree trunk.

Having some fun now.

Hi Nancy, on the leaves for your tree, I saw a website that sells sheets of natural wood, is in Madrid, Spain, his name is "Mongoya" I leave you the link. By the way, is very nice your new kayak, I like it.

Meee toooooo kudzu....Wowie wow wow. loved tha lab jumpin' off the dock. This already is such a lovely build & cant wait to see the tree. Glad I tuned in, learned two new tricks, love the way you used the greenland construction technique to hold the sheer strips in place, removing the forms from the strong back and placing the hull in a cradle while leaving the forms inside the hull to strip the deck. Thats new to me, clamps n dodads galore...gotta love it! good luck with the tree but I have the feeling you don't need luck with your skills.
May life find you well.
I am using an external strongback so the forms are removed from the risers and remain in the hull. A few will fall out when you turn it over so I make some reference lines inside the hull first and use a few small dabs of hot glue to place them back in position.a18nmk wrote: The forms aren't removed from the strongback as far as I can see!?!?
